Time is running out. If you are one of the millions of South Africans receiving the COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress grant, the window to collect your May 2026 payment is closing fast and missing it could mean waiting another month with nothing.
SASSA has confirmed that the SRD payment dates for May 2026 are split across two windows: 21–22 May and 27–28 May 2026. With the first window already passed, today, 27 May, marks the start of the final two-day payment period. Tomorrow, 28 May, is the last day.
What you need to do right now
If you have not yet received or accessed your May SRD payment, today and tomorrow are your final opportunities to do so. Payments are processed directly into bank accounts, so recipients should check their accounts immediately if they have not already done so.
For those experiencing issues, declined applications, missing payments or account queries, SASSA has made it easier than ever to get help without leaving home.
SASSA’s WhatsApp channel changes everything
One of the most significant developments for SRD recipients is the launch of SASSA’s WhatsApp self-service channel. Beneficiaries can now access key account information, check payment status and resolve basic queries without visiting a SASSA office or sitting on hold with the Call Centre.
With unemployment above 32 per cent and the cost of living continuing to rise, the R370 SRD grant remains a lifeline for millions. Missing a payment is not a minor inconvenience; for many households, it means going without food.
