Black Coffee rubbishes viral ‘xenophobic’ comments

Black Coffee – real name Nkosinathi Maphumulo – has strongly denied viral comments attributed to him, claiming that South Africans are “xenophobic”

This follows a spate of attacks against illegal immigrants in the country, as well as a warning by vigilante groups for foreigners to leave by 30 June.

On the X platform, a quote attributed to Black Coffee has gone viral.

It reads: “Being a South African abroad is now embarrassing as everyone thinks all of us are a xenophobic nation”

The award-winning DJ – who splits his time between SA and his gigs around the world – rubbished the quote, labelling it “fake news”.

‘I REALLY NEED TO SPEAK UP’

While Black Coffee has rubbished the comments, he has previously called for unity amid the 2019 spate of xenophobic attacks in the country.

Speaking to CNN, the DJ revealed that he had used his platform to raise awareness of South Africans’ grievances.

He said in a clip: “I often get embarrassed to tweet about our issues, because I have this following of the entire world watching, and I feel like I’m airing my dirty laundry to the world. But then there are times I feel that I really need to speak up.

He added, “I’m hoping that we’re going to fix things and eventually become a strong nation”.
