Friday Night Lights: Why URC is breaking tradition for final

It will be a case of Friday Night Lights for the Vodacom URC when the 2026 final takes place at Dublin’s storied Croke Park.

The showpiece match between defending champions Leinster and four-time finalists the Bulls will kick off at 8:30pm (SA time) on 19 June.

The 2026 decider is a repeat of the 2025 final played at the same venue when Leinster ran out 32-7 winners. It was Leinster’s first URC title and the Bulls’ third final defeat in four URC seasons under coach Jake White.

All four previous URC finals kicked off on a Saturday afternoon, so fans and TV viewers can expect a different atmosphere and experience next Friday night.

Leinster earned home-ground advantage as the highest-ranked finalist, but their Aviva Stadium is unavailable because the venue is booked to host a Metallica concert.

The decision was then made to return the showpiece match to the 82,000-capacity Croke Park – in a prime-time Friday night slot.

POLL: Who will win URC final?

Croke Park is home of the Gaelic Athletic Association and was also home to Ireland rugby from 2007 to 2010 while Lansdowne Road was redeveloped into the Aviva Stadium.

The stadium has also hosted several club rugby matches, including the 2009 Champions Cup semi-final between Leinster and Munster, when a crowd of 82,208 set a new world record attendance for a club rugby match.

Last year’s URC final drew a crowd of 46,127, a figure Leinster will be hoping to surpass next Friday night.
