Naas Botha has embarked on a surprise new rugby chapter in the United States after being appointed director of rugby at American club Kansas City Blues.
The club confirmed the appointment on social media, hailing the former Springbok flyhalf as one of South Africa’s most respected rugby figures.
Botha represented South Africa in 28 Tests between 1980 and 1992, scoring 312 points and captaining the Springboks during one of the sport’s most turbulent eras. The legendary pivot was inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame in 2015 and remains one of only a handful of players to win South African Rugby Player of the Year four times.

According to the Kansas City Blues, Botha will help drive rugby development in the American Midwest while mentoring players capable of competing at national level.
The move comes just months after Botha and his wife, Karen, relocated to the United States in February.
Speaking recently on the Rugby Hive podcast with commentator Dallen Stanford, the Bok legend said his family had settled in well to life abroad.
Botha previously admitted leaving South Africa was not an easy decision, but said the opportunities available to his daughters in America played a major role in the family’s move.
